Open Thread #1

I am not exploiting the current comment-less status of The Marmot's Hole, but if the traffic I've gotten today is any indication (people googling "Marmot comments" have finally toppled "Amanda Knox nude photos" for the #1 spot), there may be some spleens that need venting. Or at least some thoughts that need ruminating.

So here is my first and possibly last "Open Thread." The torch has been passed to a new generation of, uh, K-blog people. My experiment with open threads will probably go no longer than Marmot's own recess from reading comments, which I'm analogizing to a blackout of the Olympics during a world war.

So have at it. But please remember that I have standards (no, really), and I might not tolerate extreme behavior or Emilys. And if it is Marmot's new policy itself you'd like to discuss, might I suggest this post or this post instead.

Acceptable topics (though this is not an exhaustive list): Did you know that it's supposed to reach 77°F (25°C) in Honolulu today? My iPhone says it's 12°F (-11°C) in Seoul right now, with an expected high of 29°F (-2°C). Time to break out the Homer feet. If it's any consolation, it's terribly windy today. I think the wind chill brings it down to 65°F. Brrr...

If it ever got 12°F in Orange County, half the population would die. Literally. They’d be fooled by the clear, sunny weather that would necessarily accompany any situation where it gets below freezing in the OC, and they’d just die where they stand, wearing short sleeves and a windbreaker, shivering too much to walk in a coordinated fashion.

Even at 12° Celsius, we lose a lot of people.

  3. Hey, now... I am not an Apple evangelist (or whatever the term is... proselytizer?) for the iPhone or the Mac.

I even had a "don't buy an iphone" post.

  6. Brian Deutsch was a dinner topic the other day. Do I need to get off the Internet?

Ah, Brian Deutsch is a good guy and he writes a blog of substance. Having him, Marmot, or even Metropolitician as a dinner topic is our late-decade equivalent of discussing an article in the New York Times.

Now if you'd had an entire dinner conversation around Mizar5 or iheartblueballs NSFW avatar, then maybe you're letting the K-blogs infect your real-world life a bit too much.

That is, of course, one reason I stay away from commenting at The Marmot's Hole. I'm an avid reader, but a blanket non-participation in the comments section puts up a firewall of sorts for me. Of course, when I'm writing entire posts about The Marmot's Hole, it's clear that's not an impenetrable firewall, but it's not as bad as it could be.

  8. Looks like a roaring success!

The IHBB avatar is a plum. True. It's genuinely a plum. Weird what's considered NSFW, eh?

Interesting why you stay away from TMH.

BTW, Got any nude photos of the murderess in this post? It's what brought me here, you know?

My word verification is "ansolshi". Sounds like a real word. Have yourself a ansolshi Christmas, chum.

Not a bad first day, I suppose.

Wait a minute... were you being sarcastic?

The IHBB avatar is a plum.

Yes it is, in at least two meanings of the word.

True. It's genuinely a plum. Weird what's considered NSFW, eh?

I'm well aware of what he says it is, but until he releases "The Making of IHBB's Avatar," I withhold judgement.

At any rate, even if it is an actual plum, it is intended to look like bluish testicles. Realistically, in fact. And that makes it NSFW. Put it on an XS t-shirt and your kid will be sent home with a note asking you to come see the principal.

Interesting why you stay away from TMH.

Back in the day, I had to limit myself to one comment per post or else I would just spend too much time at TMH. As I got close to leaving Korea for Hawaii, I realized I just had no time to comment at TMH and even do my own blog, which is why I retired. Some people think I was banned from TMH, which is absolutely incorrect. But then again, a lot of people believe things about my blogging and/or commenting that are incorrect.

BTW, Got any nude photos of the murderess in this post? It's what brought me here, you know?

They're somewhere around here, which is why people keep coming. But I can't remember where.

My word verification is "ansolshi". Sounds like a real word. Have yourself a ansolshi Christmas, chum.

ansolshi sounds like 안설시, which could be a person's name, or possibly safety+snow+time. Something related to the Pyongchang Olympics, I suppose.

  10. Adeel: 고마워. I hope. Bringing my name up leads the conversation in one of two ways.

I'm a nice guy. I'm just short and wear glasses is all.

I knew I should have grabbed that domain when I had the chance! ;)

Ahem... Oh, dear God. See what's happened now, Robert? See the fallout you've created by shutting down the containment field? Now the radioactive Pawikirogi is going to dirty-bomb the K-blogosphere.

Pawikirogi, I think you have in your head the kernel of some very astute thoughts, and I think others are too quick to dismiss them, but you need to realize that that is partly your own fault as well.

Please read this post, particularly the second-to-last paragraph about sweeping pronouncements. If you think you can't do it on your own, I'd be more than willing to help you edit your thoughts into something more palatable to the intended audience, an editorial conscience, as it were.
