PBS Newshour on the economic battles faced by returning vets

I've mentioned this many times, but I'll say it again: PBS's Newshour is probably the single best source of objective and comprehensive information on news and current issues in the United States.

They turn their attention to the challenges faced by veterans as they separate from the US military after serving in Iraq or Afghanistan and enter a very tough job market where their skills and experience are not always well advertised or appreciated.

  1. I agree the Newshour is the best source of journalism on TV right now.

As far as the challenges faced by veterans, the US military gives ample opportunity for servicemembers to take college classes while in the service. That is why I always advocated to Soldiers to take advantage of the education benefits especially if they don't plan to stay in.

The other thing I see is that many people get out and go back to their home towns. In many cases their home towns are not where the skills the learned in the military can land them a job. Staying in an area around a military base will likely land them a contracting job doing something for the military. I have seen many guys while in network and pitch their skills to contracting companies and had themselves job lined up once they got out.
